Racing for Suicide Awareness is an initiative to educate communities about Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention. Michael's family has been impacted by suicide twice. First in 2006 when his great Uncle Chuck died by suicide and most recently in 2016 when his sister Amber died by suicide. The prevalence of mental illness and suicide is alarming and it does not have the recognition of other illnesses such as heart disease or diabetes. Furthermore, the stigma surrounding suicide continues to be a barrier that keeps it in the shadows. Through training, events and word of mouth we can make a difference. There is Hope! #ambersarmy
In 2018 RFSA hosted the Amber Lucynski Memorial Race on July 27th at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway. The goal was to raise money to donate to the Walk for Hope while educating the racing community. In 2019, RFSA hosted a community awareness event on July 12th at Tri-City Motor Speedway in Auburn. Thanks to great sponsors and amazing race fans the night was a success. For 2020, RFSA hosted a car show named in honor of Amber.
Amber's Car Show was held at Whittemore Speedway in Whittemore on August 15th. 2021 saw the return of the Amber Lucynski Memorial Race on August 6 at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway. There were two events in 2022. The Amber Lucynski Suicide Awareness night was at Mt. Pleasant Speedway on June 17th and the Amber Luycnski Memorial Race was at Birch Run Speedway on July 8th. The 2023 event at Birch Run Speedway was cancelled due to weather not once, but twice. We are currently working on a date for the event in 2024.
